Many are wondering whether coffee is good for men’s reproductive health or not. Previous studies revealed that drinking too much coffee can lower a man’s sperm count or negatively affect his sperm motility.
Other studies, on the one hand, showed that coffee may actually benefit male fertility. Let’s take a look at some of the benefits and disadvantages of coffee consumption on male reproductive potential and find out if too much coffee can really kill your sperm.
Caffeine Overview
Caffeine is the main active ingredient found in coffee, and it’s also found in tea, chocolate, soda, and energy drinks. Because caffeine is easily absorbed, you’ll feel its effects within 15-45 minutes after consuming any caffeine-containing food or drink.
Some of the known benefits of caffeine include stimulation of the central nervous system, stimulation of heart rate, and relaxation of smooth muscles. Caffeine can also help increase the secretion of catecholamines such as epinephrine or adrenalin, norepinephrine, and dopamine.
How Does Coffee Affect the Male Reproductive System?
Numerous studies have investigated the effects of caffeine and coffee consumption on male reproductive hormones and semen parameters. Some studies have shown that consumption of coffee is linked to high testosterone and sex hormone-binding globulin (SHBG) levels.
Other studies have also shown that caffeine can affect sperm DNA integrity and other semen parameters. This is a huge concern for experts because having a high percentage of sperm with damaged DNA is closely associated with a reduction in pregnancy success.
A 2017 Nutrition Journal paper revealed the results of a systematic review of 28 scientific papers on how caffeine intake affected reproductive outcomes. Here’s what the authors found:
Semen volume
Although previous studies noted that men with the highest intake of coffee appeared to have a lower semen volume than those who consumed less coffee or didn’t drink coffee at all, the difference was not statistically significant.
However, drinking too much cola did appear to significantly reduce semen volume.
Sperm count
Interestingly, the authors didn’t find a significant relationship between total sperm count and coffee consumption, even after reviewing numerous studies that involved close to 20,000 men.
However, a high cola intake did appear to negatively affect sperm count.
Sperm concentration
Just like with sperm count, the authors also didn’t find any significant relationship between sperm concentration and coffee consumption. However, the authors reported an exception.
A study conducted back in 1989 reported that men who drank 4 or more cups of coffee daily had higher sperm concentration than non-coffee drinkers.
Sperm motility
The authors of the systematic review noted that most of the 28 studies that they analyzed did not show any significant difference in sperm motility among men with varying levels of coffee intake.
Sperm morphology
In the studies that the authors analyzed, sperm morphology was reported either as a percentage of spermatozoa with normal or abnormal forms. Only one study reported an association between abnormal morphology and high coffee intake.
Sperm DNA damage
The authors noted that a higher intake of coffee was related to aneuploidy. This meant that men who consumed more coffee had a higher likelihood of having sperm cells with an abnormal number of chromosomes.
Higher coffee intake was also found to be related to increased sperm DNA damage and DNA breakage.
How to Improve Your Sperm Health
Boosting your fertility can be quite challenging, and it can take a long time. Producing healthier sperm may take at least several months since sperm cells take two to three months before they become fully mature.
Fortunately, several supplements are readily available for improving male fertility and enhancing sperm quality. But you do need to take these supplements for at least three months before you can see the difference in your semen parameters.
Tongkat Ali
Known to help men with idiopathic infertility, Tongkat Ali or Eurycoma longifolia Long Jack has several scientifically proven benefits for the male reproductive system. For one, this herb is helpful in improving testicular functions.
Not only does Tongkat Ali help protect your testicular cells from oxidative stress damage, but it also improves your testicular function. Long-term supplementation with Tongkat Ali has been shown to improve testosterone production, as well as spermatogenesis.
In terms of semen parameters, it’s been proven that Tongkat Ali supplementation can result in improved sperm motility and morphology. Other studies have also shown that Tongkat Ali may be helpful in increasing total sperm count, reducing sperm DNA damage, and increasing semen volume.
Maca
Although it’s widely used as an energy booster and stress-reducer, maca is also good for your sperm health. Multiple studies have validated maca’s beneficial effects on sperm count, sperm morphology, and sperm motility. On top of that, maca’s antioxidant effects also help reduce sperm DNA damage.
Aside from improving your sperm quality, maca is also good for boosting sexual performance. In fact, maca is widely popular as a sexual stamina and libido booster. There’s also scientific evidence that maca can help men with erection problems.
Zinc
If you feel that your diet isn’t giving you enough zinc, you can always take a mineral supplement to increase your intake of zinc.
Men with fertility concerns can’t really afford to be deficient in zinc since this mineral is extremely important for both testosterone synthesis and spermatozoa development.
Did you know that if you’re deficient in zinc, you may end up having poor sperm motility?
Within the structure of the human spermatozoa, you’ll find a high concentration of zinc in the tail. The mineral is necessary in order for your sperm cells to swim.
Zinc is also needed for the acrosome reaction, which happens when the head of a sperm cell meets the membrane of the egg cell. In short, zinc deficiency can result in impairment of the fertilization function of your sperm cell.
